Beck’s Record Club – INXS (Kick) “New Sensation”

October 8, 2010

So I’ve been meaning to post this Beck Record Club video featuring Angus from Liars and Annie from St. Vincent for quite some time now.  The song “New Sensation” is from the INXS Kick Record Club session and I imagine it doesn’t need much introduction.  But, what does need introduction or at least a re-introduction is Beck’s Record Club, as the stuff they are producing is pretty amazing.  So here’s the crash-course on Beck’s Record Club: “Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.” Record Club has reworked a handful of albums (From Velvet Underground to Leonard Cohen) with a stew of who’s who in the modern music world including Jeff Tweedy, Feist, Devendra Banhart, those one bro’s who make that band called MGMT, and grip of others.  At this point, the rendition of “New Sensation” truly melts me every time I watch it.  I got the pleasure of seeing both Liars and St. Vincent for the first time this summer at P4K and their sets were among my personal highlights.  As for Beck, that dude pretty much does what he wants at this point… I guess he is not a loser after all.  So on that note, I hope this video blows your mind as much as it blows mine.  Cheers.
